Jill Scott was in the building people! Well, it wasn’t actually a building; per se…it was an outdoor event. So, I’ll revise that by saying, Jill Scott was in Brooklyn, people! She was here. It seemed that just about all of New York City came through to hear her lovely voice at this free concert. I was too hype. I got there ahead of show time, had my portable chair on my the hubby’s back, and I had packed dinner and snacks for the entire family.
To my dismay, even though we arrived ahead of show time, we could not get in. Wingate Field was already full to capacity and the boys in blue were not letting anyone in. Sucks for me, I know. I was excited about seeing Jill perform since I found out she was coming to Brooklyn–for free. I mean, just a few months before she had a show at Radio City Music Hall, and I was willing to pay about $100 for some up in the sky mezzanine seats. So imagine my glee when I learned she’d be performing in my favorite borough for free. I was ecstatic, and I told everyone I could that Jill was coming to BK.
So back to reality. We could not get in. People tried to hustle pass, but it just was not working. I even considered trying to charm NYPD, but that thought was quickly shut down when some more NYPD reinforcements came to repeat the message that no one was getting in. Period. So…the hubby and I made an about face and headed for the car. On a brighter note, I got to see Beres Hammond, Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons perform last night and it was all that. I’ve never seen Beres perform before, but I’ve loved his voice since the first time I heard it. And, being able to hear his sweet, melodic voice live last night was priceless.
Until next time,
Anastacia

My husband & I are huge Jill Scott fans–we’ve seen her like, four times so far. She is the TRUTH! We saw her in Boston back in March, and then she came to our town, Bridgeport CT, a few months ago. She is a “singer’s singer”, let me tell you. I sing also, and all I do is just STUDY her–her vocal instrument is just amazing. The crazy thing is that from what I understand, she didn’t have any formal vocal training, nor does she have any other family members who sing–apparently it’s just a God-given gift that comes from nowhere, LOL.
I like those Wingate Park concerts, though. I used to live in Brooklyn not too far from there, so I used to check them out all the time (Teena Marie, the GAP Band, etc.)

Girl….yes, I feel you on Jill. Her voice is just beautiful and amazing. I did not know she was not at all trained, etc. She is truly blessed. And you go ahead and sing if it makes you happy! Oh, and yes…the Wingate Park concerts are always good, but this year they were great. I’m talking John Legend, Erykah Badu, Jill, Patti Labelle, Beres Hammond, Tye Tribbet, Estelle (that singer from England that I am so feeling), and a bunch of other great artists. This year the organizers did their thing! So you lived in BK too? Once a New Yorker, always a New Yorker!
