So I am all smiles today! My birthday just passed, and I must say that it was one for the record books. I had a great weekend. I have been blessed with a birth date that always falls on a holiday weekend. So while most people have just one day of birthaday indulging…I have three. LOL. And, believe me, I take full advantage of having a three-day weekend to have my fun.
I live in the great city of New York, so there is always tons of activities for me to do on my birthday weekend. I mean, there are free activities and ones that require a small fee. The beauty of living in New York is that you really don’t have to have any money to have a great time…you can have a ball on a $0 budget. I opted not to venture into Manhattan this past weekend, because I know traffic would be hell…and, frankly, there was plenty to do in Brooklyn.
So every year I always go to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) African-American Festival, which takes place from Friday through Monday. During some previous years, it would rain on my parade. But not this year. It was a whopping 81 degrees in New York City, and the sun was shining. So my hubby and I took the baby out to the BAM festival, and we had a good time. The food, the dancing, the African drums, the arts and crafts, the vendors…the whole thing was great.
We also went to Coney Island on Saturday, another beautiful day. A lot of Brooklynites don’t really go to Coney Island anymore, because so much has changed about the place. But, its still a nice place to go to. There is so much history there. There is the original Nathans (the hot dog line was super long), the boardwalk that goes on for miles, the beach (which I haven’t been in in years), the rides at Coney Island and the Brooklyn Cyclones baseball field that’s nearby. I mean there is lots to see. So we took in the sites, partook in a game or two and kept it moving.
On the third day of my birthday weekend we went to Newark’s African-American Heritage Parade in New Jersey. Did you know Newark is the third oldest city in the nation? I didn’t, until recently. Anywho, so we had fun there too. People were out enjoying the weather and festivities, and just having a good time. It was a laid back sort of atmosphere, but people were hype because the music was good, the food was on point and it was just a gorgeous day.
This was my first birthday celebration as a mommy, and I couldn’t have been happier. I’m big on living in the moment, and appreciating what I have. And, I must say that I could not ask for anything more than what I received on my birthday.
I’d like to end by saying thank you to all the men and women in uniform; you were much thought of on Memorial Day.
Until next time,
Anastacia
